The award is the highest order of merit that can be given in France for both civil and military matters.

Speaking on Eurosport’s French Open coverage, he said that receiving the award tomorrow will be “one of the greatest days” of his life.

Yet he was not entirely sure what he was being recognised for!

The tennis legend said: “The Legion of Honour is a very special award.”

He then joked: “It goes to people that lose every time they play at the French Open.

“Hopefully there’s going to be a good reason why Emmanuel Macron is presenting me with this wonderful award.

“It’s going to be one of the greatest days of my life.”

McEnroe enjoyed very limited success on the clay of Roland Garros, though he did reach the final in 1984.

He has since returned to the venue many times as a pundit and is a cornerstone of the BBC‘s yearly coverage.
