Fans hail England for instant ‘shot on target’ against Slovakia in Euro 2024 last-16 clash – but it’s not as it seems

ENGLAND were trolled on social media less than a minute after their last-16 encounter against Slovakia at Euro 2024.

That’s after the finally made a fast start to a game… with a “shot on target” inside the first minute.

The Slovaks kicked things off at the Auf Schalke Arena in Gelsenkirchen for the crucial knockout clash.

And Copenhagen star Denis Vavro immediately tried to clear the ball with a powerful kick about five seconds after kick-off.

However, Vavro’s effort took a deflection off England captain Harry Kane’s back and the ball made its way back to Newcastle’s Martin Dubravka between the sticks.

Fans swarmed social media jokingly congratulating the Three Lions, who failed to convince during the group stage with their lack of attacking edge, for registering a shot on target so early in the match.

One fan tweeted: “Kane shot on target already.”

Another commented: “Harry Kane forces a saves with a 40 yard shot off his back after just 5 seconds.”

A third gasped: “Kane shot on target already?”

This fan tagged Opta with the following post: “Kane shot on target in 3 seconds HELLO @OptaJoe.”

And that one wrote: “Does that count as a shot on target from Kane??”

However, England went on to beat Slovakia 2-1 thanks to a dramatic comeback by Gareth Southgate’s men.

Francesco Calzona’s men opened the scoring after 25 minutes but Jude Bellingham saved the Three Lions’ blushes with a stunning overhead kick in the fifth minute of stoppage time.

And captain Harry Kane completed the comeback in the first minute of extra time.

England, who still only registered two shots on target, will now face Switzerland in the quarter-finals.
